#26,27 Look at the pictures and write down a few sentences to show your impressions.

#26’s picture shows that they were put into the small space with big numbers of people.  If I see their faces, I can tell that they don’t really know that they are going to be killed or going to be working in the hard labor.

Writing: Reflection – Write a few sentences about each of the following questions.

When you walk around the different boards, you will see things that are familiar to you from the book. We have talked about or written about what we would do if this happened to us. Do you feel any different now? What similarities are there between Schindler’s List and what you have seen? Has this helped you appreciate the story more? Why or how?

Watching those pictures helped me to understand more facts about that time. Because by reading the book, it was hard to imagine the exact picture of what had happen at that time. So I think it appreciates the story more. Also I was able to know about what children like Anne frank was feeling about the Nazi and feeling of living in the annex. The similarities with the Schindler's list is that it was terrible start for the Jews. They have to confide everything to the SS like the family tree and they must do it. And also when I look at the picture marching on the road, I felt all are marched to their death because I saw it after I read the Schindler's list.

How does one man change the world? (You can choose who that man is in connection to the story or today’s study.

Malala yousafzai. She was the woman right activist. She changes the world by giving speech to us that in Pakistan, there are a lot of children who are not education. In the industrialized time, she reminded us that education is important to everyone.

#3 Describe what is happening in Germany at this time

Germany has to take responsibility of paying a lots of money due to its defeat in World War I. Millions of people lose their jobs and money; and the NSDAP starts blaming the Jews for all of Germany’s and the world’s problems.

#5,7,9 Summarize the changes in Germany and the ideology of the time

By 1932, about 6 million Germans were unemployed. At the same time, the NSDAP started gaining more power and became a most powerful party with 33.1 % of the vote. Also, certain types of art, literature, and music were banned. As a result, some people such as artists, writers, and scientists had to go abroad because of their job. Finally, ‘law and order’ came back in Germany, and the Nazis’ ideology of anti-Jewish was reflected on the media in order to educate young people to become ‘Good Nazis’.

#11 How are other people affected by the Nazis at this time (not just the Jews)

Other people who do not have pure German blood cannot be full citizens and have fewer rights because of the ‘race laws’.

#13 What is Kristallnacht?

Kristallnacht, also called as Night of Broken Glass, is a series of attack against the Jews that happened on the night of 9-10 November 1938. In this night, 177 synagogues were destroyed, 7500 shops were wrecked and 236 Jews murdered.

#14-16 Describe the Nazi treatment of Jews in Amsterdam

The registration of Jews begins in the first year of the occupation of the Netherland. Then 10 May 1940 the German army invades, and after a year, the names and addresses of the majority of Jews in Netherland are known to the occupiers throughout the process of identifying. After this, Jews and non-Jews are no longer allowed to associate with each other.

#16 How did people in Amsterdam show support of Jews?

People in Amsterdam fought against the persecution of the Jews for the very first time when 427 Jewish were sent to labour camp; however, their strike was violently broken up after two days.

#16 When you look at the photos of people, what do you feel? What is hard to see?

I am surprising at how Nazis treats Jews outrageously and wondering if they were not ashamed of their action of discrimination such as the signs that says ‘Jews not allowed’. Also, I can see the innocence of Jew people in the photos throughout their attitude of not resisting.

#19 - 20 Why did they have to go into hiding? How long do they stay in the Secret Annex?

They had to go into hiding to run away from being sent to the labor camp. They stay in the Secret Annex in for two years.

#24 Read Anne’s final entry. What do you feel when you read it? What do you think of Anne as a person?

I am impressed by how she can be so positive in the environment she was put. I think Anne is a merciful person in the way that she does not blame anyone for all of the cruelty, and also very positive person who believes that situation will get better.

#26,27 Look at the pictures and write down a few sentences to show your impressions.

It is hard to see how Jew people are treated like animals and not as equally as Germans. I cannot understand how those dreadful number of people has not done anything hurtful to society, yet getting cruel treatment and cannot resist. I am amazed by the Nazis’ immaturity of just recklessly murdering and hurting people with certain type of race.

What is the sad ending to Anne’s story? (her whole family)

Margot was sent to Bergen-Belsen and passed out at the end of March 1945. Anne followed her after a few days later. Their father was the only one who survived from the Secret Anne, and was released from Auschwitz by the Russian army on 27 January 1945.

#33 What resulted at the end of WW2? What effect do you think this has had on the world?

WW2 left many problems of how to do justice on behalf of countless innocent victims, and how to restore the rule of law to Germany. As a result, something which had never been known before were issued through the individuals’ accounts for their war crimes. I think this has had effect on the world in the way that more people were able to know more about discrimination and let them to never repeat the same tragedy again.

# 32 At the end of the presentations they have a board talking about civil courage. What does this mean and how does it connect to Oskar Schindler?

Civil courage is about being actively involved in making world to be fair and equal for people with any kind of race. For the first step, one has to be brave enough to go against the general public even the situation would be the hard one. Oskar Schindler, as a person who had a civil courage, engaged in helping Jews instead of becoming a part of many German people who ignored the discrimination problem in their country. He had courage for opposing Nazis in some way, and also taking a risk of Nazis hurting him.

Do you feel any different now? What similarities are there between Schindler’s List and what you have seen? Has this helped you appreciate the story more? Why or how?

After walking around the different boards, I feel more offended about Nazis’ treatment of Jews because I saw the actual photos of Jewish people; they were not treated like human beings. It was shocking to see the visualization of Jews’ suffering. The similar parts between the novel are how Nazis party was ruling the Germany, and how some of the Jews noticed the danger that was coming up to them. For example, Otto and Edith in the board were worrying about their future when they heard the group of Storm troopers singing anti-Jewish song, and in Schindler’s List, the Kantor family moved abroad since they heard that they cannot get good job in Germany. This has helped me appreciate the story more because now I know more about the reality of what had happened with photos and the words by people who were living in at that time.

How does one man change the world? (You can choose who that man is in connection to the story or today’s study.)

One woman change the world by honestly telling what she saw, felt, and thought during the war time. Her messages from the diary should have changed many people's idea towards the war and racism, and widen their perspectives; this is be extremely important for our future society because it suggests that mistakes that were made in the past must never be repeated.

#3 Describe what is happening in Germany at this time

Millions of people lose their jobs and are thrown into desperate poverty. Inflation is out of control. The NSDAP blames the Jews for all of Germany's and the world's problems. Hitler also claims to have the solution to the problems of unemployment and poverty.

#5,7,9 Summarize the changes in Germany and the ideology of the time

Almost 6million Germans are unemployed in 1932. Communists and National Socialists are often fought out on the streets. The NSDAP become the largest party in parliament at the November 1932 elections. Communists and Social Democrats in particular are persecuted and confined to concentration camps by the NSDAP. Certain types of art, literature and music are banned, and books are burned in the streets. Democracy is abolished. The media only reflect Nazi ideology. A variety of anti-Jewish measures are introduced.

#11 How are other people affected by the Nazis at this time (not just the Jews)

Only German who have pure German blood can be full citizens. Hitler thinks that the German 'Aryan race' is superior to all others. The Nazi see the Jewish as inferior and dangerous. Jewish people face mounting restrictions because of one purpose: to isolate the Jews from the non-Jewish population.

#13 What is Kristallnacht?

The Nazis attacks against the Jews which are 177synagogues are destroyed, 7500shops wrecked and 236Jews murdered on the night of 9-10 November 1938. 30000 are arrested and sent to concentration camp.

#14-16 Describe the Nazi treatment of Jews in Amsterdam

They often provoke violence with the Jews.

#17 How did people in Amsterdam show support of Jews?

They go on strike in protest against the persecution of the Jews, but the strike is violently broken up after two days

#18 When you look at the photos of people, what do you feel? What is hard to see?

I felt sorry that Anne getting thinner.

#19 - 20 Why did they have to go into hiding? How long do they stay in the Secret Annex?

They may received a call-up notice from the SS and had to go to concentration camp. They stay in the Secret Annex for two years.

#24 Read Anne’s final entry. What do you feel when you read it? What do you think of Anne as a person?

I felt very sad because I thought Anne never gave up her peaceful life, and she never lost her hope. I thought she always believed that tomorrow will be better than today, even though the situation is getting worse day by day. I think Anne is kind of realist and positive thinking because in her final entry, it is said "It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical." I think it means that she understood what happening to her now, and she didn't avert her eyes from reality, but she didn't gave up all hope of her peaceful life.

#26,27 Look at the pictures and write down a few sentences to show your impressions.

In the pictures on the #26 and #27, I felt sorrowful that people were not smiling. I also felt sad that they looks like frightened at German Government. They looks that they gave up their hope.

What is the sad ending to Anne’s story? (her whole family)

Edith died of hard work, Margot and Anne died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen.

#33 What resulted at the end of WW2? What effect do you think this has had on the world?

The United Nations was found in 1945. On December 10, 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since that time nearly 200 countries have signed up to the Declaration, and thereby committed themselves to respecting and upholding human rights in their national legislation. I think this effect on only an advanced nations. I have lived in Japan, America, and Canada, which are classified to advanced nation, and in those countries, I lived peacefully and there were no war in the country. However, in the developing counties, there still have war, and people were killed for no reasons. Therefore, I think there still no human right in the developing countries.

# 32 At the end of the presentations they have a board talking about civil courage. What does this mean and how does it connect to Oskar Schindler?

I think it means that one person can help many people if he/she has a strong belief. Government did nothing to help people when they really need help. In the book, "Schindler's List", it is said "he who saves the life of one man, saves the entire world." (p.8). I think this quote says same thing as the end of the presentation. In the presentation, Joop Westerweel helped hundreds of Jewish teenagers, and in the book, Oskar Shindler helped Jewish people. Both are the hero for the Jewish people in that time. Therefore, I think this tells us that your little courage to have an action to help some people will connect to help large number of people.

When you walk around the different boards, you will see things that are familiar to you from the book. We have talked about or written about what we would do if this happened to us. Do you feel any different now? What similarities are there between Schindler’s List and what you have seen? Has this helped you appreciate the story more? Why or how?

I feel same as before because I don't have any good idea to help people, and I don't have a any power to do something. I still a child, I still bring up by my parents. Therefore, if I did something and it found by German government, I couldn't help people and also, they may killed people who did nothing, but relates to me. As a result, German government will kill more people because of me. That is why, I think I will do nothing.

There are some similarities between Schindler's List and the presentation that people who against Nazis were put into concentration camp, and forced to hard work. Also, they were killed by poison gas, and one man helped many Jewish people. This helped me appreciate the story more because there was a picture of poison gas, train with Jewish people, and Anne's identity card. This made me more understand of WW2 in sight.

How does one man change the world? (You can choose who that man is in connection to the story or today’s study.

Chiune Sugihara is a Japanese Consul-General in Kaunas who saved over 6000 people of Jewish during WW2. He disobeyed the order from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and issued visa for Jewish people. He had cut down on his sleep to spent more time to issue visa. When Chiune Sugihara leave Kaunas, he keep issue visa until the train is leaving. I heard the news that a descendant of Chiune Sugihara and a descendant of Jewish who were helped by Chiune Sugihara were meet each other, and a descendant of Jewish was very thankful to a descendant of Chiune Sugihara few years ago.
